The latest in our By, Jill series of expertly crafted extract blends, The Hot Toddy is a wintertime extract inspired by one of the world's most beloved cold-weather remedies. Warm, comforting, and deeply aromatic, this blend was designed to elevate the natural sweetness of lemon and vanilla with notes of honey and cinnamon — the same soothing combination that generations of grandmothers have turned to for comfort, warmth, and a little medicinal magic.

Long before it was a cocktail, the Hot Toddy was a remedy — a warming blend of lemon, honey, and whiskey used to soothe sore throats, ease colds, and bring comfort on the coldest nights. Jill has captured that same spirit in extract form, adding all-natural vanilla and the gentle floral sweetness of honeybush to create something that feels like a hug in a bottle.

This sophisticated blend features:

  • Lemon peel chips and cinnamon chips as the warming, aromatic foundation
  • Honeybush — a naturally sweet South African botanical that adds a soft, floral honey note without any added sugar
  • Honey crystals — for a dash of extra natural sweetness that rounds the blend beautifully
  • Three vanilla bean origins — Ecuadorian, V. planifolia from Indonesia, and V. tahitensis from Indonesia (the Risa Dulce Vida Blend) — packaged separately and chosen to blend beautifully with the sweet lemon-vanilla flavor of the Hot Toddy
  • FREE LABEL: Each jar comes with a FREE Hot Toddy jar label and twine.

Just add your spirit of choice. A splash in your whiskey, a stir into hot apple cider, or a drop in your evening tea — the Hot Toddy extract is as versatile as it is comforting. For bakers, it shines in lemon desserts: lemon frostings, lemon cake, and sweet lemon glazes are especially beautiful with this blend. Its sweet, warm flavor is reminiscent of grandma's tinctures and will be a cherished addition to any extract collection.

An especially thoughtful gift for the extract maker, baker, or tea lover in your life — ideal for the holiday season, cold-weather gifting, or anyone who appreciates the art of slow, intentional flavor.

As with all new blends By, Jill, this blend pairs beautifully with our newest extract jar (optional purchase). The Capri — inspired by the sun-drenched, lemon-growing island of Capri, Italy — is the perfect vessel to showcase your finished Hot Toddy extract, and includes a beautiful decorative Hot Toddy label that comes FREE with your order if you choose to add the Capri Jar.

Instructions For Making This Extract:

  1. You will need a large open-mouth extract jar for this blend; a mason jar is ideal.
  2. This blend was designed for high flavor concentration.
  3. Pour contents of the pouch along with the separately pouched vanilla beans into a jar using the following amount of your chosen spirit (We recommend whiskey (American or Irish) for this blue, but vodka, brandy, cognac and white rum also work beautifully):
    1. 2oz Pouch — 10oz of spirit
    2. 4oz Pouch — 20oz of spirit
    3. 8oz Pouch — 40oz of spirit
    4. 1lb Pouch — 80oz of spirit
  4. Ensure that vanilla beans are fully submerged.
  5. Store in a cool, dark place for 2 months.
  6. After 2 months, remove the lemon peel chips, cinnamon, honey bush by pouring the extract through a fine mesh strainer of coffee filter, and returning the extract and vanilla beans to the jar for further extraction.
  7. For light spirits (vodka, white rum), allow to age up to 10 more months. For dark spirits (brandy or whiskey), allow a total of 18 months to 2 years for the richest flavor. Taste test by placing 1 drop of extract into 1 tablespoon of milk. When you love the flavor, it's ready.
  8. Remove the vanilla beans once ready and decant into a more decorative jar — like the Capri — for use or gifting.
  9. If you prefer more vanilla flavor, leave the vanilla beans in longer, taste testing regularly.
