Flavored spirits can make incredible extracts... or disappointing ones.

So how do you know the difference?

It starts with two simple questions:

Is the alcohol the right proof?

And will the flavor actually make your extract better?

Before you fall in love with a flavored spirit, check the alcohol percentage. One of the foundations of successful extract making is using a spirit that falls within the recommended 35–50% ABV (70–100 proof) range. If it doesn't, keep shopping.

Once you've checked the proof, the fun begins.

At VanillaPura, we don't use a lot of flavored spirits in our extracts, but there are a few we absolutely love.

One of our favorites is coconut rum. We use it in our Pina Colada Artisan Blend, where it pairs beautifully with pineapple, coconut, and vanilla to create a tropical extract that's become one of our community favorites.

We also love a good spiced rum. We use it in both our vanilla extracts and our Pecan Vanilla Extract, where its warm notes of cinnamon, clove, vanilla, and baking spices add richness and depth. It beautifully complements the natural flavors of vanilla while bringing a cozy, fall-inspired character to pecans.

And we've heard from many extract makers who swear by peanut butter whiskey for chocolate and banana extracts.

The point is, don't be afraid to experiment.

We're not the extract-making police. One of the best things about making your own extracts is creating flavors that are uniquely yours.

Our biggest piece of advice is to read the label before you buy. The more artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, and additives a spirit contains, the more likely those flavors are to become distracting after months of extraction. We've found this especially true with many flavored vodkas, which can sometimes develop a metallic or artificial note over time.

Whenever possible, choose flavored spirits made with real ingredients and natural flavors. If you're unsure, make a small test batch first. It's a fun way to experiment, and sometimes your favorite extracts come from trying something unexpected.

At the end of the day, homemade extracts are about creating flavors you love. Start with the right proof, choose flavors that complement your ingredients, and don't be afraid to experiment.

Some of the best extracts begin with someone asking, "I wonder what would happen if..."
