We are sometimes able to offer one-time low prices on products in limited quantity. When we do, we offer them as "special buys". Special buy offers have their own name to help us distinguish and separate inventory. While no two vanilla beans are ever the same, this "Batu" bean was grown in the same region as our regular Salatiga Java Indonesian bean but offered today at a lower price and with limited availability. If it’s available, buy it quickly as it will sell out.

VanillaPura's planifolia Indonesian Vanilla Beans are of the highest quality and have a rich, dark aroma. This particular vanilla bean originates from the region of Indonesia near Salatiga (pronounced Sal-a-tee-ga) which is close to the large city of Java. This is one of the southern most regions of Indonesia, Southeast of Sumatra, West of Papua and Sentani, north of Australia and an ocean (the Indian Ocean) away from Madagascar. Vanilla beans are a relatively new crop to this region. Difficult to obtain and available now on a limited basis.

When you first open a pouch of Batu Indonesian vanilla beans, your nose will be met with a traditional and powerful vanilla scent that is characteristic of Planifolia vanilla beans like Madagascar and Mexican. But behind the vanilla scent, you will quickly notice an earthy rich cacao and a scent of mocha. As you bring an individual bean closer to your nose, the strong, earthy vanilla aroma becomes more pronounced with a stronger mocha and hints of anise, mace and dark chocolate. Finally, after months (or even years) of extraction, your finished extract will demonstrate an extra bold and classic vanilla aroma as the earthy scent fades somewhat into the spirit and you are left with a complex extract with enhanced vanilla sweetness underscored with scents of dark chocolate, anise and mocha.

Batu Indonesian vanilla beans are very oily and great for use in making vanilla sugar. They boast a high vanillin content, making them ideal for virtually any baking application where conspicuous vanilla sweetness is desired. These are plump vanilla beans, and are usually between 5" and 7" inches long and have a dark brown color.

VanillaPura vanilla beans are all shipped vacuum sealed for freshness and should be stored unrefrigerated in a cool, dry and dark place.

Indonesia is the second largest producer of vanilla beans in the world, just behind Madagascar. As a country, Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands spanning 735,000 square miles surrounded by beautiful waters right on the equator. The broad expanse of land, climate and unique soil conditions across Indonesia result in an equally diverse vanilla offering. An Indonesian vanilla bean grown in one region is quite different than an Indonesian vanilla bean grown in another region.
