Can You Blend Spirits When Making Vanilla Extract?

Yes — and sometimes it's exactly the right move. But spirit blending in extract making requires intention. Here's what to keep in mind before you start mixing.

Smoky Spirits Will Dominate

Bold, smoky spirits like whiskey, bourbon, and dark rums carry powerful flavor profiles that will easily overpower lighter spirits like vodka, white rum, and gin. If you're blending a dark spirit with a light one, expect the dark spirit to lead the flavor. If that's the profile you're after, go for it — just do so deliberately.

When Blending Is Necessary: ABV Correction

One of the most practical reasons to blend spirits is ABV correction. Vanilla extract requires a minimum of 35% ABV (70 proof) to properly extract flavor compounds and ensure preservation. If your base spirit falls below that threshold, blending in a higher-proof spirit is the right solution.

We recommend using a flavorless, high-proof option like Everclear or a high-proof white rum. These will raise your ABV without introducing competing flavors that could disrupt your extract's final taste.

Blending Within the Same Spirit Family

Blending two bourbons, two rums, or two brandies together is generally a great approach. The spirits share similar flavor foundations, so they complement rather than clash. Just keep in mind that the stronger or more dominant of the two will carry the predominant flavor in your finished extract.

Blend Deliberately — or You May Not Like the Result

Spirit blending absolutely has its place in extract making. It can add complexity, correct ABV, or help you use what you have on hand. But blending without intention can lead to an extract with a muddled or off-putting flavor that's difficult to course-correct once the beans are steeping.

Before you blend, ask yourself: What flavor am I trying to achieve? If you can answer that clearly, you're ready to blend.

Quick Reference: Spirit Blending Guidelines

  • Dark + Light spirits: Dark will dominate — blend only if that's your goal.
  • ABV below 35%? Add high-proof Everclear or white rum to bring it up.
  • Same spirit family blends (bourbon + bourbon, rum + rum): Generally safe — the stronger flavor leads.
  • Always blend with purpose — know your target flavor before you start.
