Ok...if there is any reason to try real vanilla extract...pure and rich vanilla extract...this is it!! Don't dilute your ice cream with artificial anything. Nearly every flavor of vanilla extract will create a richness and authenticity that only pure vanilla extract can provide. Try it with Tongan, Tahitian, Madagascar or Mexican extract. I personally would only use a rum-based extract, but vodka and bourbon will also do the trick. You'll be surprised at the difference that real vanilla makes in your homemade ice creams.

Making vanilla ice cream for the first time can be a bit daunting...so roll with it and just have fun. Here's my favorite recipe and, as with most of my recipes, it's fairly simple and intuitive. It's a no-churn recipe...you simply prepare it in a bread pan and let it chill! Involve the kids and have fun!! Post your comments here about how it turns out!

Ingredients
  • 1 pint (2 cups) heavy cream
  • 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Add the vanilla extract and the sweetened condensed milk in a small bowl and stir to combine.
  2. Add heavy cream to a mixing bowl and whip on high for several minutes until stiff peaks form. Turn the mixer on low and slowly add the vanilla mixture to the heavy cream. Once combined, pour into a freezer-safe container and freeze at least 6 hours to overnight.
