And we are so pleased to introduce you to their first-ever harvest of vanilla beans in the United States. These premium Grade A V. planifolia vanilla beans from Pemba Island offer traditional, exceptionally creamy aroma with notes of cacao, and sweet vanilla, creamy, smooth, subtle cacao, buttery flavor.
Named After Farmer Bakari Mataka
We named this rich, oily and fragrant bean after the farmer that oversaw the development of this brand new vanilla bean plantation. His name is Bakari Mataka and is pictured here.

Pemba Island - Spice Island of Tanzania
Pemba is one of three major islands off the coast of Tanzania. They are known for the rich soils that produce spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin seed, peppers and much more. The same rich soils that produce world-renowned spices now create exceptional vanilla beans with unique flavor profiles.
Accentuated Sweetness & Profound Vanilla Aromas
We were absolutely amazed to smell the first samples of this vanilla bean. Similar to the Lindi Tanzania bean but with an accentuated sweetness and profound vanilla aromas, buttery and creamy notes, soft hints of cacao and caramel in a medley of delicate sweetness. These are one of the most memorable vanilla beans we have encountered.
Exceptionally Creamy with Cacao Notes
Like all VanillaPura beans, the Bakari Pemba beans are of the highest quality. They are plump, dark, extremely rich in oils and have a strong vanilla base that you would be surprisingly accustomed to. The traditional, exceptionally creamy aroma with notes of cacao creates an unforgettable sensory experience.
Sweet Vanilla with Buttery Caramel
Sweet vanilla, creamy, smooth, subtle cacao, buttery flavor with soft hints of caramel in a medley of delicate sweetness. For homemade vanilla extract, use the ratio of 1oz of beans for every 8oz of alcohol. For light spirits (vodka, white rum, gin), age up to 1 year. For dark spirits (bourbon, dark rum, brandy), age 18 months to 2 years for optimal flavor development. Visit our spirit pairing guide for detailed recommendations.
