Grade A Indonesian vanilla beans are usually oily, pliable and can be cut open to remove the caviar for use in other cooking applications in addition to their use in extract making.
To make your first extract, follow these 4 simple steps:
- Put 1oz of vanilla beans in an 8oz bottle or larger.
- If the beans are too tall, cut them in half (or fold them and insert them into the bottle fold first) to make sure they are fully submerged in the alcohol.
-
Fill the bottle with 8oz (1 cup) of your favorite spirit. Leave a little air on top.
- Close the lid and store the extract in a cool/dark place for 12 months. And just like that, your very own homemade vanilla extract!
